About
A love of reading and writing led me to earn my MA and PhD in English at the University of Rhode Island--where I also discovered a love for helping students read closely, write well, and love books. I am an Assistant Professor of English at Bowie State University, a small HBCU in the University System of Maryland, where I am fortunate to be able to teach a range of classes from introductory composition to graduate-level literature courses. Prior to joining the BSU faculty, I taught courses in writing, literature, public speaking, and interdisciplinary studies at the University of Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University, and Providence College. I also tutored for the Talent Development program at URI, a summer program that helps support students who may not otherwise have access to college for financial or academic reasons. My research areas include: Caribbean and Caribbean diasporic literature and studies; postcolonial literature and studies; African American literature; first-year writing; research methods; tutoring and mentorship; curriculum development; media, propaganda, and advertising; and race, identity, and nationalism. In my nonfiction writing I try to explore issues of Caribbean and postcolonial identity. Over the 2016-2017 academic year I was on the core committee for URI's National Endowment for the Humanities Next Generation PhD planning grant, which helped URI design programs and foster relationships geared at developing new possibilities for PhD students. I love cooking, researching dishes, and learning about ingredients. I live in Maryland with my favorite hiking companions: my husband and our dog. I practice yoga and have been growing strawberries. Both seem to be going well.
