Projects/Programs
Over the past several years I've been involved in coordinating and/or promoting programs and events. Here are some great projects I've been privileged to participate in or coordinate:
URI's National Endowment for the Humanities "Next Generation PhD" Planning Grant, Project Manager
Because humanities PhDs go into so many fields within and outside of academia, NEH's grants are designed to help universities diversify their PhD students' programs of study in preparation for varied career opportunities. At URI, our "Humanities at Large" project involves developing cross-departmental collaborations; fostering partnerships with non-academic institutions; exploring options for PhD dissertation formats and requirements; and supporting the mentorship of humanities PhD alumni for current graduate students. My role as Project Manager included working with the Director to coordinate logistics, building outreach and project sites, and liaising with a subcommittee developing partnerships with off-campus institutions like museums, libraries, and historical associations. web.uri.edu/nextgenphd.
URI Graduate Student Career Colloquium, Coordinator (Nov 2014-Mar 2015)
Along with Professor Kathleen Davis (Director of Graduate Studies for URI's Department of English) I developed and coordinated the first University of Rhode Island Graduate Student Career Colloquium. The event hosted a range of speakers who presented on the variety of fields for which graduate studies in the humanities and related social sciences prepare students. These included alternative academic fields (such as instructional design and undergraduate research development), publishing, nonprofit work, fundraising and grant writing, communications, and marketing. My role as a coordinator of the event involved developing relationships across departments to build support for the project, preparing funding proposals and budgeting, coordinating a database of participants (presenters, attendees, supporters), designing the event website and other materials (flyers, posters, program), collaborating on inviting and hosting speakers, coordinating logistics, and promoting the colloquium. Literacy Volunteers of Washington County, Promotions & Fundraising Volunteer 2014 & 2015
Each summer, LVWC hosts an author as part of their fundraising efforts to support adult literacy in RI. My role in helping promote the event involved email and flyer campaigns to local universities, libraries, historical societies, and other institutions as related to the topics covered by the visiting author's work.
Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA), Marketing & Promotions Fellow 2012-2014 Conventions
I worked with the NeMLA Chair and other convention coordinators to collect, create, and share promotional materials for conventions held across the northeast. My work included writing copy for the NeMLA newsletter, providing the website designer with promotional material, and a large-scale email campaign to spread the word about the convention and its calls for papers.
URI Graduate Student Conference
Co-Chair, 2011; Marketing & Promotions, 2008-2013; Board of Former Chairs, 2013-2015
As chair I was involved in coordinating every aspect of planning and developing this event: budgeting and fundraising, writing promotional materials, selecting presenters, hosting keynote speakers and arranging their travel, promoting the event by email, speaking with university officials to spread the word and garner support, hosting 60 presenters from across the nation to discuss current research in the Humanities and the Social Sciences in 17 panels (over 100 people participated in the full day of events, attending the plenary, keynote, and panels), coordinating with catering services, and designing and ordering printed materials (flyers, posters, programs).
